When do earlier and cancellation appointments appear?

Earlier appointments are not released in a batch at 6am on Mondays. They can appear at any time during the week when another learner cancels or changes a test, or when DVSA adds examiner availability.

DVSA says there is no best time to look for an earlier appointment. If you already have a booking, use the official change-driving-test service and check at sensible intervals.

Should you join the queue at 6am on Monday?

Join at 6am on Monday only if a test around 24 weeks away would suit you. This is normally when the booking-service queue is longest because the new week has just been released.

If you want a test sooner than 24 weeks away, DVSA says joining the Monday 6am queue gives you no advantage. Earlier appointments can appear throughout the week instead.

How often can you search?

Do not repeatedly search over a short period or try to access the service on several devices at once. DVSA says excessive searching can cause a search-limit message, temporary loss of access or an Error 15 message.

Only the learner can book and manage a car driving test. Someone can help while the learner is present, but the learner should complete as much of the process as possible. Do not give an unofficial service your driving-licence number or booking reference, and do not use a website or app that scans the booking service for appointments.

How long do you have to complete a booking?

After selecting an appointment and accepting the timing warning, you have 15 minutes to complete the booking. The appointment might no longer be available if you do not finish in time.

The official service signs you out after 30 minutes of inactivity. Have the required details ready before you start, and check the centre, date and time carefully before confirming.

Is there a DVSA waiting list?

There is no waiting list or cancellation list at most driving test centres. Some centres that do not open every day may offer an on-hold option; the booking service will show it when it applies.

DVSA cannot send notifications when a new or earlier appointment appears, and its customer-service staff cannot create an earlier test. They see the same appointments available through the booking service.

Booking-service opening hours

The online driving-test booking service is normally available from 6am to 11:40pm, seven days a week. Planned maintenance can temporarily make it unavailable, so check the official page if the service is down.

Release dates are not waiting times

A test being released 24 weeks ahead does not mean every learner waits 24 weeks. Earlier appointments can appear, and the time learners actually wait is a separate measure.
