What happens if your theory-test certificate expires?

What expiry means for a practical test and what you need to do next.

Direct answer: A car theory-test pass certificate currently lasts for two years. You must pass the practical test within that period; if it expires first, you need to pass the theory test again before booking a practical test.

Pre-launch check: Check the DVSA publication each month and record the source date when data is refreshed.

Check the certificate date early

Do not wait until the final weeks to look at the expiry date. Waiting times and your readiness can affect whether a practical-test date is realistic.

If the certificate is lost, that is different from expiry. Official services can usually verify a valid pass without the paper certificate.

If it has expired

Prepare for and book a new theory test through GOV.UK. A previous practical-test booking does not extend the certificate automatically.
