How to change your DVSA driving test
Open the official GOV.UK service called ‘Change your driving test appointment’. You can use it to find an earlier appointment, move the test to a later date, change the time or select an eligible test centre. The learner must make the change themselves; a driving instructor or unofficial booking service is not allowed to manage a car-test booking for them.
You will need your UK driving licence number and either your driving-test reference number or theory-test pass certificate number. The booking service shows the centres, dates and times currently available to your booking.
DVSA or DVLA: who changes the test?
DVSA manages practical driving tests in Great Britain, while DVLA issues driving licences. If you searched for ‘DVLA change my driving test’, use the GOV.UK DVSA booking service linked in the official sources below.
These car-test rules apply in England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland has a separate service on nidirect.
Which test centres can you move to?
Since 9 June 2026, each car-test change can keep the same centre, move to one of the three nearest centres at that time, or return to the centre where the current booking was first made.
For a booking that already existed on 9 June 2026, the return option is based on the centre booked on that date. The official change service shows the options that apply to your appointment, and DVSA can update its nearest-centre list.
This location restriction applies to car tests. Other types of driving test can still be moved to any test centre in Great Britain.
How many times can you change a driving test?
Since 31 March 2026, you can make up to two changes to an existing car driving-test booking. Changing the date or time, changing the test centre, or swapping with another learner counts as a change.
Changing more than one detail in the same transaction still counts as one change. For example, changing the date and centre together uses one of your two changes.
Updating your address or contact details, or adding or removing your instructor’s reference number, does not use a change. A change made by DVSA, such as one caused by bad weather, does not count either; DVSA says it resets your allowance to two available changes.
After you have used both changes, you must cancel the appointment and book a new test if you need to change it again. GOV.UK says you will get a full refund if you cancel at least 10 full working days before the test date. Check the current official rules before acting.
Notice periods and paying again
You can change an appointment until the test starts, but GOV.UK says you normally have to pay again if you give less than 10 full working days’ notice for a car test. Mondays to Saturdays count as working days; Sundays and public holidays do not.
Check the official service before confirming a change, particularly if the test is close or an unavoidable short-notice situation applies.
Compare before you change
Choose a centre you genuinely intend to use. Consider your familiarity with the area, travel time, instructor availability and the car you will take—not only historical waiting times or pass rates.
Each test-centre page reproduces DVSA's published list of the three nearest alternatives and its approximate driving distances, alongside the site's published waiting-time and pass-rate figures.
DVSA says the nearest-centre list can change. The official booking service controls which moves are actually available for your booking, so check GOV.UK before making a decision.
