Driving time and total test time are different

The widely quoted 35-minute figure is the approximate time spent driving. DVSA's guidance for examiners says a standard category B car test normally lasts 38 to 40 minutes in total and must include at least 30 minutes of driving.

The same timing applies whether the car has a manual or automatic gearbox. Treat every figure as a guide rather than an exact finishing time, because the route, traffic and circumstances of the test can vary.

The practical driving-test sequence

There is no official minute-by-minute schedule, but a standard car test follows this sequence:

Complete the identity and eyesight checks, then answer one ‘tell me’ vehicle-safety question before moving off.
Drive in different road and traffic conditions while the examiner assesses your general driving ability.
Complete the independent-driving section by following a sat nav, traffic signs or a combination of both.
Carry out one reversing exercise and answer one ‘show me’ question while driving. You might also be asked to perform an emergency stop.
Return to the test centre, receive the result and listen to the examiner's explanation of any recorded faults.

What is included in the 35-minute drive?

The approximate 35 minutes covers the on-road assessment as a whole; the sections below are not added together as separate blocks of extra time. Current GOV.UK guidance says independent driving can occupy 20 to 35 minutes of the drive.

General driving on a range of roads and in different traffic conditions, but not on motorways.
Pulling over and moving away, including a normal stop, moving out from behind a parked vehicle and a hill start.
Independent driving using a sat nav set by the examiner, traffic signs or both.
One reversing exercise: parallel parking, bay parking, or pulling up on the right and reversing for around two car lengths.
One ‘show me’ vehicle-safety question while the car is moving.

Can the test finish earlier or later?

Yes. Around 35 minutes of driving and 38 to 40 minutes overall are planning figures, not promises of an exact finish. Traffic, the route and the time needed to carry out the required exercises can all affect the return time.

Taking a wrong turning does not automatically create a fault or end the test; the examiner will help you return to the route. A test can finish early if the examiner believes the driving presents a danger to other road users, but that is not a normal timetable variation.

How long does an extended driving test take?

GOV.UK says an extended car test involves around 65 minutes of driving. DVSA examiner guidance requires at least 60 minutes of driving and says the complete test takes approximately 70 minutes.

An extended test is not the ordinary next step after failing. It applies when a court has ordered a driver to pass an extended test following a disqualification. The court will tell the driver if this requirement applies.

How much time should you leave in your diary?

As practical planning advice, keep roughly an hour clear from the appointment time for a standard test and its result discussion, then add your own travel time. This is a sensible buffer rather than a separate DVSA test-duration figure.

Do not arrange a tight commitment immediately afterwards. Plan the journey, check the centre's access instructions and arrive at the time stated in the official guidance and your booking details.

What about Northern Ireland?

DVSA runs tests in England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland tests are run separately by the Driver and Vehicle Agency. Nidirect says its practical car test includes an eyesight check, safety questions and about 40 minutes of driving, including independent driving.
